About Elaine Farmer

Elaine Farmer Elaine has always had a deep connection to the natural world around her and enjoys taking part in translating natures’ magnificence to canvas. Landscapes have always been her passion, where shapes, textures and lighting always offer an endless source of subjects and challenges.

Elaine was born into a family of musicians and grew up in Massachusetts with seven siblings, all with various artistic talents of their own. She began her own artistic journey at the age of 12 with her first set of oil paints and has been studying and painting art ever since. She has studied art through classes and workshops with many well known artists in the U.S. and internationally.

A national award winning artist she has earned numerous awards throughout the U.S. including Arts for the Parks-Top100 (2011). Elaine is represented in galleries and participates in juried art exhibits throughout the U.S. Elaine’s work is found in private and corporate collections both in the U.S. and abroad.

Living in England (1983-1986) gave Elaine the opportunity to study art with a private instructor from Oxford. It also provided her the opportunity to visit the National Gallery of Art in London and the Louvre in Paris and traveled extensively throughout Germany and Holland. This period was very inspiring for her and developed a love for English and European landscapes. It was in 1985, that she began her professional art career, selling her works.

Moving to Georgia (1986-1996), Elaine became active in the Warner Robins Artist Assoc., serving as President in 1989-90 and as Chairperson for several art shows. She also served as member-at-large for the Middle GA Artist’s Assoc. In 1990, she began teaching art classes and workshops at local art studios. She owned and operated her own art gallery, Art Expressions, from 1991 through 1996, leaving it behind to return to her native New England.

Traveling the world to find new ideas, her current body of work focuses on quiet landscapes as seen near home and far beyond. Using a simple design structure and brighter than life colors, she blends traditional realism with a contemporary impressionistic feeling, capturing the essence of her inspiration. While exploring this new idea of simplifying the scene to reflect the bare essence of the theme, she still holds the Hudson River Valley Artists in high regard for their valuable studies in plein air along with their classical academic approach to painting.

Being involved in her community has always been an integral part for this artist. Elaine maintains an art studio in Amherst, NH where she provides art instruction and workshops. Through her teaching experiences, her students have led her to focus on developing an easy to understand color mixing method for use by working artists, teachers and the novice painter which has in turn produced a book on the subject “HARMONIOUS COLOR SCHEMES; a no nonsense approach using the Color Wheel”.
